The Chicago Tribune is going to find out what life is like without the Associated Press. In an experiment that is sure to shake the worldwide news cooperative, all Tribune newspapers will boycott the AP next week to see if cutting the service is a viable option. The Tribune’s own media critic reports the paper will partner with other services for this experiment, including Reuters, Agence France Presse, CNN, Global Post and Bloomberg.
The AP has been cutting fees over the last year and expects a 20% rate reduction coming up. But that may not be enough for some news outlets, especially companies facing bankruptcy.
